Slap Happy

Last week while I was chatting on the phone with my cousin who lives in Salem, MA, she mentioned her newest kitchen gadget that she just can’t get enough of. When I told her that I’d never heard of it she was taken aback. So I did a little research of my own, and I, too, soon became seduced by the wonder of what is the Slap Chop.
A small, handheld device, with a hollow core and a W-shaped blade concealed within the body of the gadget, the Slap Chop minces and dices a plethora of foods. By “slapping” the lever on the …

Saucy Tomatoes

Last week pasta was the main topic of conversation. But naked pasta isn’t my thing…I need the sauce! My favorite is stewed tomatoes with spaghetti, preferably linguini, farfalle or rotelle.
When I lived in the North End, pasta was king. In the summertime, the Italian family who owned my building made massive amounts of tomato sauce which they would jar and use throughout the rest of the year. They set up shop in the courtyard a few floors below my window and the sweet smell of simmering tomatoes filled the apartment. It was magical.
Although you’re probably not planning on making quite …

Morning Brew

I thought I’d take today’s post to mention a pair of new gadgets that have made their way into my apartment’s tiny kitchen over the past few weeks and which have really made a huge difference in my daily routine. For those of you who dread the approaching hours of the early morning as much as I do, when your alarm will soon be jolting you from the pleasantry of dreamland and into the real world, then you probably head straight for the coffee pot post stretch-and-yawn.
Due to its growing popularity, you’ve probably heard of the newest craze in coffee, …

Pop Goes The Cake

cake-pops by babycakes
The hottest new trend in cake design puts a spin on the traditional sense of cake itself. At first glance, a cake pop looks nothing like the birthday or wedding cakes we are so used to seeing, and later devouring. But once you taste the cake-on-a-stick there’s no denying the delicious factor.
Similar to Dunkin’ Donuts‘ beloved munchkins, or as they’re more commonly known, donut holes, cake pops are a round, bite-sized sweet served on a stick like a lollypop.

They are decorative and adorable, and perfect for any kind of celebration whether it be …

Whipped Cream: The perfect addition to any dessert. Light, sweet, undeniably delicious; whipped cream is the secret ingredient that can make-or-break your birthday cake, or any kind of cake for that matter. For the true sweet-tooth chef cool-whip ‘a la can’ just doesn’t cut it. It’s the homemade, hand-whipped (or mix-master whipped) stuff that really gets my taste buds singing “More, please!”
But really, who wants to take the time to whip the cream into silky perfection? My mother, being strictly against canned-whip, is known for making everyone wait to eat dessert until she whips the cream. And the whipping of …
