An Afternoon at Mistral

Walking into Mistral around noon, I almost expected to see some sort of secret, daytime chaos that would explain how the restaurant pulls off its perfectly orchestrated dinners. But the restaurant was pristine and silent, sunlight poured into the room through large windows, and the kitchen hummed quietly in the background. In a few hours, the restaurant would be lit only by the tentacles of chandeliers and filled with the clink of forks on plates and the murmur of wait staff getting to know their guests.
I met with Shane Gray, Mistral’s pastry chef, and Mark D’Alessandro, the general manager, at …

Boston Bites Back!

With two more days of Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer left for you to enjoy, another important fundraiser comes to the forefront! Boston Bites Back initiated by Ming Tsai and Ken Oringer as a way to help raise money for The One Fund and support the victims of the Marathon Bombing.

Our community united so quickly after the horrible events of April 15th – especially the restaurant community. Immediately they sprang into action.  Little did we know that Ming Tsai and Ken Oringer had something even bigger in mind!

Boston Bakes takes me a year to organize where desserts rule! This is …

Restaurant Review: Strip T’s

Many notable restaurants and chefs in the Boston area made it to *the list* this year. I’m talking about the 2013 James Beard Foundation Award Restaurant and Chef semifinalists list. Does the name Tim Maslow sound familiar? For those who have not heard of him, Chef Tim was nominated for Rising Star Chef of the Year! He’s the chef and co-owner of Strip T’s in Watertown.
Strip T’s is a diner/sandwich shop by day, and fine restaurant at night. Formerly a chef at the famous Momofuku Ssäm Bar in NYC, Tim oversees the dinner hours while his father has been making sandwiches in …

Asia Food Tour: Part 2

It’s been two weeks since I returned to the states from my Asia trip and I already miss the good eats there. I’ve already covered Beijing and Guangzhou in Part 1. For today’s blog post, I’ll give you a virtual food tour of Hong Kong and Macau. Formerly a British colony, Hong Kong is now a special administrative region of China, and its fast-paced culture and city life makes it parallel to New York City. Macau, a former Portuguese colony, is the other special administrative region of China, known as the “Las Vegas of Asia.” Both very different areas, but overflowing …

Chile Olive Oil and Boston Bakes For Breast Cancer

Last night was the debut of my freelance chef company! We will be specializing in catering and private parties. I was asked to do an event for Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer, in support of an up and coming olive oil company named Chile Olive Oil. The competition was to create a dessert using the olive oil and making it so you can taste it in all the ingredients. The winner would have the chance to donate $1000 dollars to Boston Bakes for Breast cancer in his or her name; they would also get a write up from Chili Olive …

Boston’s 20 Most Iconic Dishes

Eater Boston (local restaurant blog) recently announced Boston’s 20 Most Iconic Dishes. What I love about this list is that you won’t find typical Boston foods (i.e. baked beans, clam chowder). Instead, Eater carefully selected dishes that are both delicious and unique to Boston’s current food scene. I have already crossed off seven items from the list, and plan to try the remaining dishes within the next year. Here are my reviews of what I’ve tried so far.

#9 Neptune Oyster‘s Maine Lobster Roll
There are two options: served hot with butter, or cold with mayo. I’ve only tackled the hot version and …

Sweet As Pie

Some may say pie is the perfect dessert. Enjoyed warm, straight from the cooling rack, topped with whipped cream or paired with cool vanilla ice cream. It doesn’t matter how you serve it, pie has become an all-American, always delicious dessert. Everyone has their favorite kind of pie. For me, it’s homemade coconut cream pie.
My 21st Birthday Coconut Cream Pie
At my family Christmas party everyone always saves room for Auntie Judy’s orange, lime, and chocolate pudding pies with the graham cracker crust. Last week for Thanksgiving it was my mother’s sweet-but-tart, out-of-this-world lemon meringue pie that makes my mouth water …
