Cape & Island Bakes

Just like in Boston, Boston Bakes has widespread partners throughout the North East. Our newest partnerships take us all the way to Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard for a week of baking delicious desserts and fundraising right at the beginning of June. While our newest set of fundraising events, Cape & Island Bakes has grown relatively large in the few years it has been running, and now encompasses much of the seaside Massachusetts.
Just like in Boston, restaurants all up and down the seacoast partner with us to serve delicious desserts, such as fan favorites like Boston Creme Pie …

Trying a Video Recipe -Chocolate Almond Braid

Have you ever wondered how easy those video recipes really are? We’ve all seen them, a two minute long video with a delicious looking dessert recipe, but how often do we actually try them out? Well, I decided to try one of these recipes and see if reality matched the sweet image of dessert in the videos.
Tasty is the reigning authority on easy, delicious, and interesting desserts for bakers and novices alike, and so I took their Chocolate Almond Braid recipe for a whirl. It seems almost too easy and too delicious not to try. A crispy flaky pastry filled …

B4BC Meets: A Home Baker

There is a look that anyone who has successfully prepared a dessert wears when presenting his or her creation. It’s the smile of a toddler coming over to show you a particularly intricate Play Doh monster and it radiates a unique pride. Baking is fun because you are given a strict set of chemical and physical rules to which you must adhere, but you are working to create a product that is unique, beautiful, and tastes good to the largest array of taste buds you can.

Irish Soda Bread

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! If your feeling festive and want to make some Irish food, Irish soda bread is a great place to start. It’s easy to make, and delicious. Despite what many people think, it’s actually only been around since the 1840‘s, although it’s popularity has grown tremendously. It uses mostly basic ingredients because it originated from times of poverty in Ireland. The reason a cross is put on top of the bread is because people used to believe it would protect houses from the devil. My friend made some bread today and shared her recipe with me.
 Ingredients:

1 pie …

Holiday Cookies – Naughty & Nice

Seasons Greetings!
This is Bakes for Breast Cancer volunteer and Miss Boston contestant, Michelle, again. Christmas is a week away, I can hardly believe it! It’s time for me to buckle down and ramp up my holiday cookie baking or I’ll have some family and friends to answer to if they don’t receive my annual box of Poppy-Raspberry Kolachkes!
With Miss Boston two months away I’ve been working out and eating healthier to train for the swimsuit portion of the competition. I talked to a wonderful nutritionist who suggested I try a gluten-less diet to help me incorporate more vegetables and lean …

Miss Boston Contestant & Boston Bakes

Hello! My name is Michelle Nigro and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to start volunteering with Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer. I’m 23 years old from the Boston area and I am passionate about breast cancer awareness and fundraising.
Throughout my entire life I’ve tried to do my part to spread awareness and fundraise for a cure. Growing up I would hold bake sales at school and sign up my sports teams for Breast Cancer fundraising walks in Boston.
When I entered college I started organizing my own fundraising and awareness events. As the philanthropy chair of my sorority, Alpha Epsilon Phi, at …

Apple Picking

I always enjoy this time of year because it’s apple and pumpkin picking season. It’s a lovely tradition in New England, and the fun parts are spending quality time with your friends and family, and baking delicious treats with your picked fruits.

I went to Tougas Farm in Northboro about a month ago, when the season just started. There’s still time to visit before the month of October ends. I like this farm because it was very organized and well-run, there was a wide variety of apples available for picking, and they had the most delicious cider donuts, fresh kettlecorn popcorn, and …

Macaron Gifts

Since my first attempt at making French macarons, I’ve made them twice more – same recipe (from my trusty MacarOn Café recipe book), but I altered the appearance for special occasions.

Earlier this year, I made confetti macarons for my friend’s birthday gift and another friend’s graduation gift, which were coincidentally around the same time. As I was browsing Pinterest one day, I stumbled across beautiful confetti macarons from Style Sweet CA. I borrowed the decoration idea because what’s more festive than confetti? Especially for celebrations like graduations and birthdays. The only step in the macaron process was to put some sprinkles …
