I started Monday morning by a visit to the Popponesset Marketplace to pick up some half and half and ice coffee at the Country Store and some muffins at the bakery across the way. It had the last of the season feel as I walked around.
Most of the stores and the mini golf have closed for the season. The Country Store will be open daily on a daily basis but for fewer hours during the week and longer hours on the weekend till October or until business drops and it is time to close for the season. The Raw Bar should be open on weekends but there was no sign in the windows mentioning their fall schedule.
One day the Cape is in season and the next day we are in off season. The Popponesset Inn and the Marketplace were so packed on Sunday you could not get near it. Monday was a different story! There was no problem getting a seat at the bar at the Inn on Monday to enjoy a lobster roll and peach cobbler. Tuesday the Inn will be closed until the weekend and soon closed for the season.
So it is appropriate that Tuesday starts with rain, our tears for the end of the summer season. The one good thing now is when driving on the Cape; it will be easier to make a left turn- something you can’t do during the summer!
