Strawberry Shortcake

Who doesn’t like a classic strawberry shortcake? This recipe is a healthier version of the cake that has the same tastiness of regular shortcake cake mixed with the sweetness of some fruit. It’s probably one of the healthiest cakes out there considering it still involves cake.

Strawberry Shortcake Cookies

Strawberries are definitely one of my favorite fruits. They’re juicy, summery, delicious and healthy – they even have antioxidants to help fight cancer.
I also love strawberry ice cream, cake, yogurt, drinks, candy, etc. – basically anything strawberry. Let’s not forget simple chocolate-covered strawberries. The other day, I stumbled across a recipe online for strawberry shortcake cookies. The only strawberry cookies that I can remember eating are Pepperidge Farm’s strawberry thumbprint cookies (formerly called verona cookies) (*mental note: add this to my baking bucket list*). I was definitely intrigued by the idea of shortcake and cookie in a single form together, …

A Piece of Cake

I’ve been celebrating a lot of family birthdays lately – five, to be precise – and we’re only three months into 2013! With every celebration, we always have a sweet ending: cake from a local bakery or homemade desserts. Here are the different kinds of cake that I’ve been enjoying.

We celebrated my grandma’s birthday in early January, and her favorite cake comes from Eldo Cake House in Boston’s Chinatown. Eldo’s signature cake is a yellow sponge cake that is spread with sweet whipped cream and filled with assorted fruits (strawberries, mangoes, peaches, and kiwis). They also sell small individual servings …

Zap That

from scientificamerican.com
Today’s gadget is a little outside the kitchen cabinet, but stick with me and you might be happily surprised by this intriguing idea.
We’ve all been victims of a fruit fly infestation. Those pesky little buggers appear out of no where and are a pain in the apple to get rid of.
So many times I’ve boughten a bunch of bananas, and, especially in the humid summer air, they’ve gone brown before I’ve had time to enjoy them. And the minute your fruit surpasses prime ripeness the fruit flies begin to descend.
But thanks to the SE battery operated tennis racket bug zapper, …

Baking with a Twist

Every holiday season my family asks me to bake “my” apple pie.  I never thought it was anything spectacular because the grocery store down the street sold the same pie with neater lattice tops.  When I baked, I followed the instructions from the book in the pantry, added water to the pre-mixed dough package, and popped the dessert into the oven.  Easy as pie, as they say.  The more I made the same recipe, however, the more I deviated from the original directions.  I’d eyeball the nutmeg and leave the skin on the apples.  It became sloppier than the store-bought …

It takes a lot of work to make Boston Bakes a reality!

Another week has gone by and now we have over 140 participating in this year’s Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer.   We would like to welcome Gennaro’s North 5 Square Ristorante in Boston to their first Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer.   It was a week of spending time seeing who is participating from last year.  We are happy to say 120 from Boston Bakes 2010 have already signed up for Boston Bakes 2011! We are not done and are working very hard to surpass what we did last year.   With time on our side, we can do it!
