Local Business: Coffee Break Cafe

International Coffee chains are a somewhat recent phenomenon, and they definitely have their upsides. It’s nice to know that even half way across the world, you can still get your coffee the way you’re used to thanks to Starbucks. But there’s something I still find pretty amazing about local businesses. One of my favorites is Coffee Break Cafe, a chain based out of Quincy. They have three different locations around the city, all equally quaint and laid back. They’re a local business that supports other local businesses by getting their baked goods imported daily and using dairy products from local …

Try a No-Bake Cheesecake for your Labor Day Weekend!

When I saw this recipe in the Boston Globe, I was intrigued by the beautiful story of this recipe being made for a father’s summer birthday and how the recipe came from a co-worker of his wife from the University of Connecticut in the 60’s.  The longevity of this recipe says so much!
I was also curious what a no-baked cheesecake would taste like!  The cheesecake I bake has a creamy, smooth texture and a golden finish.  I knew a no-bake dessert would not have that same taste and texture, but would it have a similar taste to be called a …

Oreo Truffles

December is always a busy month for me. With holiday shopping, festive parties, final exams and papers, reunions with friends & family who are home for the holidays, as well as travel plans (I’m leaving for a three-week trip to Asia today!) on my agenda, I barely have any time for baking therapy. Every year, I always like to give homemade treats as Christmas gifts to my coworkers. This (busy) year, I took the easy, no-bake route and made Oreo truffles or cookie balls. These are delicious, festive, easy to make, and there are only three ingredients!

Cream Cheese Brownies a Household Favorite!

If you need something to bake that is quick and easy and a much requested recipe in my house try these cream cheese brownies!  These brownies are good for a bake sale, good for the holidays, great to bring to someone’s house and basically good to make anytime you are in the mood to bake something!
Brownies are easy to make and adding a bit of cheese cake to the batter makes a good brownie a little better. I have been making this recipe for my daughter since she was little when I first got Rosie’s All Butter Fresh Cream Sugar-Packed …

Carrot Cupcakes

I’m a little obsessed with cupcakes – baking, decorating, and of course, eating these cute morsels. Even though cupcakes seem to be fading from the trendy sweets race, they’re still one of my favorite desserts. I remember when I first became interested in baking during college… I was too intimidated to even attempt following a Martha Stewart recipe. Instead, I’d always reach for a box of Pillsbury cake mix, a red-colored container of Betty Crocker‘s pre-made frosting, and a tube of rainbow sprinkles. Let’s just say that I’ve come a long way these past few years, but I’m still no expert. Now, I …

Spago Cheesecake! Easy to Make & A Great Cheesecake to Enjoy!

Although today it might be cold and cloudy with a little snow on the grass on this spring day, last weekend I took a break from all my work on Boston Bakes to do something I had not done in a while! Bake!  It felt good to bake something.  The house was filled with wonderful smells, the windows were open and it was a good day.

Freeze and Bake Rugelach! Perfect for your Holidays!

I love recipes that say right from the start “make the whole recipe and freeze them unbaked.” As I get ready for the upcoming holidays which are so early this year there is a blur between Labor Day and Rosh Hashanah, I am excited that Ina Garten’s Rugelach recipe fits the bill!

I am trying to remember my first rugelach memory but to be honest I can’t!  All I know is that rugelach was always a staple in our house when I was growing up in New York and it did not matter if it was homemade or from Walls or …
