King of the Corn

grilled corn on the cob from myrecipes.com
When I think about summer cookouts I think pasta salad and corn on the cob. As a kid it was often my job to shuck the corn before tossing it into the steamer. Smothering on the butter and sprinkling on the salt made for the most delicious combination of sweet and savory. I hardly minded all the corn-hair that got stuck in my teeth.
Today, I tend to skip the butter and salt and just enjoy the au-natural sweetness of the corn itself. Maybe it’s the novelty of eating something with my hands that makes …

Zap That

from scientificamerican.com
Today’s gadget is a little outside the kitchen cabinet, but stick with me and you might be happily surprised by this intriguing idea.
We’ve all been victims of a fruit fly infestation. Those pesky little buggers appear out of no where and are a pain in the apple to get rid of.
So many times I’ve boughten a bunch of bananas, and, especially in the humid summer air, they’ve gone brown before I’ve had time to enjoy them. And the minute your fruit surpasses prime ripeness the fruit flies begin to descend.
But thanks to the SE battery operated tennis racket bug zapper, …

The Girl Behind The Gadgets

Hello Readers! My name’s Alanna and I am a 22-year-old college senior working towards a degree in Writing and Communications. I have been a Boston resident for the past four years, with the exception of my quick international stint, during which I lived and studied in Galway, Ireland.
Originally from Cape Cod, Mass., I have aspirations of someday being a famous author.
Cooking became a part of my life at a young age. My childhood friends and I would set up my father’s old video camera and film our own ‘cooking shows’. This meant we would fumble around the kitchen, dressed in my mothers …

Tuesday brings rain! Summer has ended!

I started Monday morning by a visit to the Popponesset Marketplace to pick up some half and half and ice coffee at the Country Store and some muffins at the bakery across the way.  It had the last of the season feel as I walked around.

Most of the stores and the mini golf have closed for the season. The Country Store will be open daily on a daily basis but for fewer hours during the week and longer hours on the weekend till October or until business drops and it is time to close for the season.   The Raw Bar …

Chocolate peanut Buddha in Falmouth

Once back on the Cape, I visited CupCakes of Falmouth.  A large cupcake bakery where the bakery is open for all to see, the cases filled with cupcake after cupcake made from organic ingredients. The Official Village People meets the Barnstable County Fair!

It has been years since I’ve gone to The Barnstable County Fair on Cape Cod.  The week long Fair was a staple in our lives every July when my daughter was growing up.  My sister was visiting from Florida and I gave her the options of what we could do on the Cape during her visit.  I sent her the schedule for the Cape Cod Playhouse in Dennis, the Cape Cod Melody Tent and the Fair. Seeing the Village People was the only thing she really wanted to do!  So it was back to the Barnstable County Fair on opening …
