Mexican Food in Barcelona

While living in Barcelona, I got to experience a ton of the city’s amazing restaurants. There was everything from traditional Spanish food to Turkish durums. But the food I found myself eating the most was Mexican! Growing up, my family was never really into Mexican food, so it wasn’t until I was about age 12 or 13 that I realized how much I loved it. While Boston certainly has an ample amount of Mexican restaurants, I found them to be practically everywhere in Barcelona. I wish I had time to try them all, but I did get to try a few. My favorite of the bunch was Rosa Negra.

Located in downtown Barcelona, it attracts a nice mix of tourists and locals. The restaurant is owned by Eric Otto, who is originally from Mexico. The walls are painted teal and hot pink, and the lamp shades look like they came out of the 70’s, with flowered patterns and fringe on the bottom. There’s also plastic dolls stuck to the walls, which are commonly used at funerals in Otto’s hometown of Guadalajara. I was a little freaked out by the decorations at first, but then I tried the food.

The nachos make for a great appetizer. They’re your standard nachos, with tomato, onion, and a layer of refried beans on the bottom, but the huge amount of cheese is what makes them so delicious. You can also get them with jalapeños, which I recommend!

As for the main course, the chicken and pineapple quesadilla was my favorite. It’s served on a soft tortilla, held together with melted Monterey Jack cheese. It comes with sour cream on the side, and you can add on guacamole too. The enchiladas tapatias are another good choice. The corn tortillas are filled with chicken and covered in a spicy green tomato sauce.

Besides the food, Rosa Negra also has some great drinks. Mojitos are their most popular drinks, I always ordered the raspberry flavored one. It’s very sweet with a little bit of mint flavor. It’s served in a glass with these tiny circle ice cubes and sugar around the rim.
