Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! If your feeling festive and want to make some Irish food, Irish soda bread is a great place to start. It’s easy to make, and delicious. Despite what many people think, it’s actually only been around since the 1840‘s, although it’s popularity has grown tremendously. It uses mostly basic ingredients because it originated from times of poverty in Ireland. The reason a cross is put on top of the bread is because people used to believe it would protect houses from the devil. My friend made some bread today and shared her recipe with me.

 Ingredients:

  • 1 pie plate
  • 1 table spoon of baking powder
  • 1 tea spoon of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of melted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups of raisins
  • 1 cup of buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 4 cups of flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup of sugar

Directions:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Grease the pie plate.
  • Put 1 table spoon of buttermilk into a bowl. Put the rest of the buttermilk into another bowl.
  • Mix the raisins into the larger buttermilk bowl.
  • Mix one table spoon of melted butter into the smaller buttermilk bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, stir the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together.
  • Pour the remaining butter into the center of the mixture and stir.
  • Mix the eggs into the mixture.
  • Take the bowl with raisins and buttermilk and pour it into the mixture.
  • Shape the mixture into a ball.
  • Put the dough ball into the pie plate, making sure the top is rounded.
  • Using a knife create two light lines on the top of the dough in the shape of a cross.
  • Brush the butter and buttermilk mixture onto the bread, making sure it goes into the lines.
  • Bake the dough in the oven for an hour. The bread should be a golden color when it’s done.
