A Message from Peter- THE CANCER IS BACK

Since today is Memorial Day and we celebrate those who have served our country, I have chosen today to share this message from our friend Peter Devereaux.  Peter served our country and was based at Camp Lejeune. He is one of the many men based at Camp Lejeune who developed male breast cancer.

My treatment stopped working. My cancer had a chance to grow and get inflamed. We have already started a new treatment and they are hopeful for great results. These are the challenging times when my body is extremely sore with …

Asia Food Tour: Part 1

I’m finally back from my blogging hiatus, after spending almost a month in Asia! I traveled to Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, and Guangzhou to sightsee, visit family, and of course, enjoy all the delicious food. It was my first time visiting mainland China (Beijing and Guangzhou) and Taipei, Taiwan. Today’s blog – part 1 – focuses on some good eats in Beijing and Guangzhou. Beijing is the capital of China and historic site where the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and Forbidden City are located. Guangzhou is the third-largest Chinese city (after Shanghai & Beijing), located in Southern China.

Boston’s 20 Most Iconic Dishes

Eater Boston (local restaurant blog) recently announced Boston’s 20 Most Iconic Dishes. What I love about this list is that you won’t find typical Boston foods (i.e. baked beans, clam chowder). Instead, Eater carefully selected dishes that are both delicious and unique to Boston’s current food scene. I have already crossed off seven items from the list, and plan to try the remaining dishes within the next year. Here are my reviews of what I’ve tried so far.

#9 Neptune Oyster‘s Maine Lobster Roll
There are two options: served hot with butter, or cold with mayo. I’ve only tackled the hot version and …

I owe it all to Nora Ephron! My Brisket that is!

Today I have decided to re post a blog I did a long time ago. I dedicate this blog to Nora Ephron who lost her battle to cancer at the age of 71.  Nora was known for such memorable movies as Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and Julie & Julia to name a few.  Her book Heartburn is on my bookshelf in my kitchen with my other cookbooks, very worn and stained from years of going to it for her brisket recipe which I made every year for the holidays to rave reviews.
Rest in peace Nora Ephron, my thoughts are with …

Presidents like desserts too!

Since Monday is Presidents’ Day, I thought it would be appropriate to focus today’s blog on our fearless leaders, past and present. Don’t worry, this post will not be a long history lesson. Instead, I’ve done a little research on some of the desserts that famous presidents have eaten and enjoyed.

Let’s start with our current and 44th president, Barack Obama. Did you know that Mr. President loves peach cobbler, specifically the one served at Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop in Chicago? Here is a video of his rave review back in 2001. Cobbler is a fruity dessert baked with a top crust that’s made of batter, …

Kelley Tuthill Five Years Later

I don’t ever think I will forget the day I heard five years ago that Kelley Tuthill a TV reporter on WCVB in Boston was diagnosed with breast cancer.  As a reporter Kelley was in my home all the time and now to hear Kelley, a young mother, wife and daughter was fighting breast cancer was a shock.   But I am sure it was more of a shock to her and her family but it was a shock to the Boston Community as well.
What was more amazing to me was that Kelley chose to share your story as she was …

Pop Goes The Cake

cake-pops by babycakes
The hottest new trend in cake design puts a spin on the traditional sense of cake itself. At first glance, a cake pop looks nothing like the birthday or wedding cakes we are so used to seeing, and later devouring. But once you taste the cake-on-a-stick there’s no denying the delicious factor.
Similar to Dunkin’ Donuts‘ beloved munchkins, or as they’re more commonly known, donut holes, cake pops are a round, bite-sized sweet served on a stick like a lollypop.

The Evolution of Dee Dee Ricks Part 3: Steve Jobs passing

I spoke to Dee Dee Ricks the day after Steve Jobs lost his courageous battle against cancer.
“Even with all the “milestones” he passed, he could not beat cancer.  He handled his cancer with grace resonating worldwide that cancer knows no socioeconomic boundaries. When you have cancer you never take it for granted no matter how many milestones you pass” Dee Dee told me.
The passing of Steve Jobs did not go unnoticed by Dee Dee’s sons.  His passing weighed on their young minds. As their mother, Dee Dee had to remind them that she was ok.   She was strong, her cancer …

Tequila & Great Food await you at Temazcal Tequila Cantina!

We recently celebrated a very big birthday at Temazcal Tequila Cantina in the Seaport area of Boston. I chose Temazcal Tequila Cantina because it had an incredible selection of tequila including one of my favorites Don Julio 1942. When I was there previously for drinks the food looked great and I knew I wanted to go back. What a great location! Right on the waterfront I thought sitting as close to the water as possible would make me feel as if I was on holiday. Mexico here I come!
Temazcal Tequila Cantina does not take reservations but I thought if we …
