I’m finally back from my blogging hiatus, after spending almost a month in Asia! I traveled to Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, and Guangzhou to sightsee, visit family, and of course, enjoy all the delicious food. It was my first time visiting mainland China (Beijing and Guangzhou) and Taipei, Taiwan. Today’s blog – part 1 – focuses on some good eats in Beijing and Guangzhou. Beijing is the capital of China and historic site where the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and Forbidden City are located. Guangzhou is the third-largest Chinese city (after Shanghai & Beijing), located in Southern China.
The number one must-eat food in …
When last I wrote about Food Trucks, Needham had its own food truck but just for the season when the weather was good. Then they went away and never came back to Needham the following year. I was so excited the suburbs had a food truck. My excitement was short lived.
I thought most food trucks disappeared when the weather got rough, but I learned such is not the case! Food and Cupcake Trucks grace our streets all year long regardless of the weather. I really need to leave my computer more and check out the wide variety of food trucks …
The winter months can be long and dreary, especially in the harsh wind and gray skies of Boston. Its hard to motivate yourself to go out and about in this weather and as a result a lot of long cold nights are spent cooped up inside your own home. I want to challenge you today to break this dull dreary winter routine and spice up your dark months by exploring some of the fabulous restaurants that Boston has to offer. Now I wouldn’t exactly consider myself a connoisseur of Boston restaurant, being a college student with limited accesses around the …
One of the hardest parts of baking is finding the right recipe. I know that I am very lucky for the fact that I can call my mother at any moment and ask “What’s the best recipe for (insert desired delicious item here)?” and she would answer without missing a beat. She always has the best recipe for everything but that is because she has tried them all. However not everyone has a mother who cooks as much as mine, and not everyone has the time to experiment with recipes the way she does. I know that as a college student, with …
Hello Readers! My name’s Alanna and I am a 22-year-old college senior working towards a degree in Writing and Communications. I have been a Boston resident for the past four years, with the exception of my quick international stint, during which I lived and studied in Galway, Ireland.
Originally from Cape Cod, Mass., I have aspirations of someday being a famous author.
Cooking became a part of my life at a young age. My childhood friends and I would set up my father’s old video camera and film our own ‘cooking shows’. This meant we would fumble around the kitchen, dressed in my mothers …
Usually during the summer when my daughter comes to visit we go to a local restaurant that serves Cioppino and she orders it every time. Just our luck this year, Cioppino was not on the menu! What is a mother to do late on a hot summer’s day but to make her daughter Cioppino! What is Cioppino? It is a fish stew in a nice tomato and wine broth served with toasted bread. Although this dish sounds Italian, it actually got its start in San Francisco believe it or not in the late 1800s by Portuguese and Italian fishermen.
So I …
I like to buy cookbooks. I still have a vast collection from my mother in addition to what I have acquired over the years. I had a huge Gourmet magazine collection until recently when I ran out of space and realized I could get many of the recipes from epicurious.com! Many times I wonder why buy cookbooks with so many wonderful recipes on line. Just by doing a simple Google search, I can get recipes galore! But there is still a good feeling about having a collection of wonderful cookbooks!
There are classic cookbooks that everyone should have and then there …
My daughter came down with cookbooks with recipes for me to try. Finally I tried one recipe from Gwyneth Paltrow -my father’s daughter cookbook. I love this cookbook and am going to get my own copy but more about that at another time!
I have smoked briskets outdoors for countless hours getting up at an unheard of hour to start the process. When I cook a turkey in my Showtime Rotisserie it does not take more than two to three hours before it is ready. I was intrigued about how a chicken would taste if I cooked it long and slow …

No other word describes these brownies better than the name they were given – outrageous brownies and every time I have made them for someone the first comment I get is how outrageous they are and when can I make them again for them! What better compliment can you ask for!
I can’t take credit for creating the brownies that honor goes to Ina Garten! I owe Ina Garten my sincere thanks and gratitude for letting me make the best possible brownies.
Now that Boston Bakes is done for 2011, I have some brownies to make for those who requested them. Soon …
