In my last post, I mentioned that one of the trends of 2013 was eating healthier, and by extension gluten-free. An ingredient that is also supposed to be big this year and embodies this trend is Quinoa – a seed native to the Andes regions of South America (it is pronounced KEEN-WAH). It’s very nutritious which is one of the things that has led to its popularity – it is low in sodium and cholesterol, a full protein so it’s good for vegetarian and vegan diets, and full of calcium, iron, and fiber.

Hello everyone! My name is Urey and I’m currently a grad student at Emerson College in Boston. I’ve only been in Boston for a little over a year after moving here from Toronto.
I’ve always enjoyed baking. I grew up in Nigeria and my mom and sisters and I used to spend a lot of time making cakes and cookies from scratch, and I watched my aunts making Nigerian snacks. Every new year, lists of new food trends seem to come from all angles, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.
So, here is a list of 6 trends expected to be big in 2013:
Already a popular snack, popcorn has been named the snack of the year, and is being revamped in new ways. Chocolate covered popcorn and caramel corn are still treats, but expect more fancy stuff this year – like Campari-Infused Popcorn, Bacon Caramel Popcorn or Popcorn Crème Brulee. Try making a popcorn cake at home, or even substituting white chocolate with dark for an even sweeter treat.
