Adventures in Portland Ice Cream

This past week I returned from the West Coast, where I spent some time in Portland, Oregon. Portland has a reputation for being a weird city, and it certainly lives up to it. From people being obsessed with the pattern on the airport carpet (They sell it on t-shirts, stickers, and water bottles) to the graffiti that constantly appears on walls saying “Keep Portland Weird”, there’s no shortage of character to this city. With a city like this, the food is bound to be equally as unique. Salt and Straw is the perfect example of this. It’s a small ice cream shop located in the Alphabet District of Portland. Most ice cream shops today carry flavors well outside the typical chocolate and vanilla, but I have never been to a place with flavors anywhere near this strange. I got to the Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper and the Freckled Woodblock Chocolate. Balsamic and black pepper combined with ice cream sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it actually works well together! It was sweet but still a little bitter. They also offer a pear and blue cheese flavor for anyone daring enough to discover what blue cheese ice cream taste like. The shop is locally owned and only uses sustainable and organic ingredients, so it’s a great company to give your business to. If you find yourself in the Portland area and want to try ice cream flavors you probably won’t find anywhere else, check them out!
