sweetgreen

My friends work in the Back Bay/Copley area in Boston and have been raving about their new favorite lunch spot there, Sweetgreen, right across from the Boston Public Library. Sweetgreen serves fresh, made-to-order salads and wraps, using local and organic ingredients. What can be so great about a simple salad? I had to see and try it for myself.

During peak lunch hour, the lines are usually out the door, and one can expect to wait up to 20 minutes in line! Fortunately, I visited during an off-time and didn’t have to wait in line at all.

The menu is simple and features eight salad/wrap options plus one rotating monthly special. I have tried the Guacamole Green salad bowl (see photo above), which came with organic mesclun, roasted chicken, avocado, grape tomatoes, red onion, crushed tortilla chips, and topped with a lime cilantro jalapeño vinaigrette and a fresh lime squeeze. It truly was delicious, fresh, well-mixed, and plentiful. However, those with larger appetites may not be satisfied with the portion.

I have also tried the September salad (see photo, left), which consisted of organic arugula, shredded kale, local watermelon, heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, organic mint, local feta cheese, spicy sunflower seeds, and champagne vinaigrette dressing. For a meatless salad, this was very satisfying and “summery” because of the fruit component. I loved that they sliced the mint leaves right before they added it to the salad, and the sunflower seeds gave it a nice crunch. I enjoyed both salads and my refreshing watermelon lemonade (September special drink). If you must have sweets after your meal, Sweetgreen also serves tart frozen yogurt.

Besides the organic aspect, what makes Sweetgreen unique from other salad chains is the use of both regular and uncommon ingredients, plus a variety of house-made (all gluten-free) dressings. They are happy to substitute any ingredient that you don’t like in your salad. Each order comes with a slice of fresh bread from Iggy’s Bread. You also have the option to order online and pay with LevelUp (pay with phone app).

For all you salad lovers and those who just want a healthy and delicious meal, Sweetgreen is a must-try! I hope they open more locations in the Boston area.
