Thanks Sarah for sharing your week with us and for participating in Boston Bakes 2011!

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer

This past Sunday, Mother’s Day, crowned off our week long participation in Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer.  Restaurants and bakeries around the commonwealth all selected a Boston Bakes dessert, donating 100% of the proceeds from the sales during that week to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.  We selected the Classic Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce and sold more cakes that week than any other since we opened!

What was more incredible was the outpouring of support and gratitude that we received throughout the week.  We put up a post about why we decided to participate, and this prompted a lot of phone calls and emails from people wanting to say thank you and share their story.

One customer wanted to order a cake to be sent to Attleborough. While this, unfortunately, was outside of our delivery range, she called back with a special request.  She really wanted to support the Boston Bakes event, so she ordered a cake to be delivered to the Elizabeth Stone House, a shelter for women and children. They were thrilled to have the gift for Mother’s Day.

Another customer shared her story with us. She is in her second round of breast cancer, this time stage four. In her words, “my life plan is simple…  laugh all the time and eat cheesecake! Just an FYI, I told every one at the oncology clinic today  about you and your cheesecake… Bottom line I may not see a cure in my lifetime (or I may) but I appreciate you doing what you can to help find the cure.” We made sure she knows that we are rooting for her from the side lines.

This past week was the busiest we have ever experienced, with us working around the clock to get everyone their cakes, and we couldn’t imagine a better reason.  On Wednesday night, I called my aunt to tell her that we would be featured on the Fox 25 morning news for Boston Bakes. You can view photos of the event here.  That night, she told me that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and would be going for treatment at Dana Farber. Thankfully, its an early stage.  I already felt passionate about our participation in Boston Bakes, but the outpouring of feedback and stories of strength from our customers really gave me strength, inspiration and support throughout the week.

So, we owe a huge amount of thanks to all of the customers who participated in Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer; whether through buying a cake or sharing their story.  If you weren’t able to participate but want to support the cause, please consider making a donation to Dana Farber or eating ice cream at the 2011 Scooper Bowl!
